What to check before buying a replacement bathroom faucet

Check holes and spacing before the style name

Record the visible layout and measure between hole centers where they are accessible. Moen identifies 4-inch centers and wider, adjustable layouts among common bathroom configurations. A base plate may conceal unused holes, so a top-view photo alone may not settle the question. Look for your sink model or have the layout checked without dismantling the faucet yourself.

Some single-handle models fit more than one layout. Delta’s Sandover 15748LF-SP, for example, specifies a one-hole or three-hole 4-inch installation with its included optional deck plate. That flexibility belongs to that model. Do not assume every single-handle faucet or separately sold plate covers your existing openings.

Compare the spout with the basin

Spout height and reach answer different questions. Moen’s reach guidance considers both the faucet’s dimensions and the sink edge between the mounting hole and the bowl. The same spout can overhang two sinks differently.

Use the dimension drawing to compare the outlet position with your basin, and note what bothers you about the current setup: cramped handwashing space, an awkward stream position or splashing. A tall faucet in a product photo is not evidence that it suits a shallow or compact sink.

Leave room above and below the countertop

Check the proposed handles through their full movement against the backsplash, wall and nearby fittings. Also compare hole diameter and countertop thickness with the mounting limits. Delta’s Arvo 35840LF specification drawing, for example, gives separate hole-size, maximum-deck-thickness and recommended backsplash-clearance dimensions. These measurements vary by model.

Photograph the accessible cabinet interior, including the basin, pipes, valves and drawers. Ask the installer to confirm space for the mounting hardware and connections. Report existing dampness, corrosion or a known shutoff problem before treating the request as a straightforward fixture swap.

Confirm the drain and the complete shopping list

Check whether the faucet includes a drain and whether you intend to replace yours. The Arvo example includes an overflow-style push pop-up drain; that does not establish compatibility with every sink. Ask for the drain type to be checked against your basin and its overflow arrangement.
