What to prepare before a bed-frame assembly visit

Before a bed-frame assembly visit, confirm what will support your mattress and what happens to the bed already in the room. The frame, mattress, foundation and storage pieces need to work together. Matching the size name alone does not settle those questions.

Check the mattress support before reusing a foundation

Record the mattress brand, model, dimensions and thickness. Say whether you hope to keep an existing foundation or adjustable base. Have both manufacturers' requirements checked before assuming it can sit inside the new frame or replace its slats.

Tempur-Pedic, for example, does not approve traditional box springs for its mattresses. Its guidance allows qualifying slatted frames with slats at least 3 inches wide and gaps no greater than 4 inches, provided the structure supports the mattress and occupants. Those requirements belong to Tempur-Pedic; use your mattress maker's guidance for your setup.

Identify the complete bed configuration

Send the selected frame's product link and the support-system option on your order. Identify its headboard, footboard, side rails, slats or platform, center support and any support legs from the instructions. Include separately ordered storage drawers or a headboard attachment kit where applicable.

For IKEA's white queen MALM with two storage boxes, the required SKORVA center beam is included in the price but packaged separately; the slatted base is sold separately. Other configurations differ. This example and the mattress example above describe separate checks, not a recommended product pairing.

Measure the storage space you can actually use

For loose underbed bins, compare their height and width with the usable openings between legs and supports. The frame's outer dimensions do not describe those openings. Include lids, handles and the space needed to pull a bin clear.

For built-in storage, show the bedside tables, rug and nearby furniture in a room photo. The MALM example uses boxes on castors, so their rollout path matters. Ask for storage access to be checked in the proposed position before the bed is loaded with bedding.

Plan the changeover from the existing bed

Strip the bedding and empty underbed storage before the agreed visit. Arrange where the mattress and any retained foundation will rest during assembly, and who will move them. If the old frame needs dismantling, include that work in the request; also distinguish moving it within the home from removal or disposal.

Send Coast & Craft these details with the frame and mattress links so the complete changeover can be reviewed:

  • Which mattress, foundation and headboard you intend to keep.
  • Any support components or storage accessories ordered separately.
  • Photos showing the bed position and storage access.
  • Old-frame dismantling, mattress movement and removal work requested.
