Planning caulking? Decide what gets painted and what stays visible
Before asking for white caulk throughout a room, identify which joints will be painted and which will remain visible. A baseboard-to-wall line and a tiled bathroom corner can need different products and finishing sequences. Marking those locations makes the estimate more useful than choosing one tube color.

Map the finish, one joint at a time
Take a wide room photo and mark the requested seams. Label each as painted trim, tile corner, countertop edge or another specific location. Where a joint meets two finishes, say whether you want the final line to read as part of the wall, trim or fixture.
DAP's ALEX PLUS White technical sheet lists baseboards, molding and trim among its uses and permits painting with latex or oil-based paint. For a painted trim joint, identify the actual topcoat and confirm whether adjacent wall or trim repainting belongs in the estimate.
Choose exposed sealant against the neighboring surfaces
GE Advanced Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath is non-paintable and offered in white, clear and almond. With that product, the sealant selection determines the visible finish; later paint is not a way to correct the color.
Save the existing grout brand and color code if available, but ask to see the proposed sealant beside the actual tile, countertop or fixture. CUSTOM's Commercial 100% Silicone Sealant sheet recommends a sample board or inconspicuous test because installed shade can vary. Compare the sample under the room's usual lighting and record the approved product and color.
Distinguish tile joints from grout repairs
If both tile lines and perimeter seams need attention, mark them separately in the photos. CUSTOM identifies its Commercial 100% Silicone Sealant for corners, changes in plane and expansion joints. Matching a grout color does not make the two materials interchangeable.
Ask which locations need flexible sealant and which belong in a separate grout-repair scope. Avoid a request to 'regrout everything' when the intended work includes both.
Agree on the painting sequence
The selected product determines the order. DAP's ALEX PLUS White instructions require at least 30 minutes before painting, with longer drying in cool or humid conditions. CUSTOM's silicone instructions instead call for painting beforehand and installation after grout has cured.
Have the painter and sealant installer agree on that sequence before booking. Record who supplies the topcoat, who paints the agreed surfaces, and whether a later visit is included. A caulking estimate should make the finishing responsibility clear.
Send a short finish checklist
Send Coast & Craft your marked photos with:
- Each joint's location and intended final color.
- Which surfaces receive paint and which sealant stays exposed.
- Known paint and grout details, plus the approved sealant sample.
- Related painting or tile work and its planned dates.
