Drawer slides: what to photograph before buying replacements

Describe what changed

Record whether the drawer catches at one point, sits crooked, opens less than before or no longer slows as it closes. Say whether the problem began suddenly or gradually, and whether the contents changed. These observations help define the inspection; they do not establish that the slide itself has failed.

Photograph visible damage around the attachments, including a loose rear bracket, split wood or a drawer bottom that has moved. If the drawer is dropping or hardware is pulling away, leave it undisturbed for assessment instead of opening it repeatedly for a video.

Show the system, not just the drawer front

Include a closed view showing nearby drawer fronts and an open view showing the accessible hardware. Photograph both sides and any visible supports beneath the drawer. Record the cabinet or furniture brand, approximate age and any earlier repair.

Some identifying marks are only visible with the drawer removed. Start with what is accessible; have the installer identify the removal method and obtain hidden details when needed.

• A wide photo locating the affected drawer in the cabinet or furniture.
• Clear close-ups of names, numbers and the ends of accessible runners.
• Photos of visible clips, brackets and damaged attachment areas.
• An overall view alongside each close-up so its location is clear.

Measure the available space

Record the drawer-box width and length, cabinet opening width and available depth where you can measure safely. Keep the decorative drawer front separate from the box measurements, and note uncertain dimensions rather than rounding them to a product size.

Ask the installer to compare the actual opening with the selected model's drawing; a matching advertised length does not confirm that a runner will fit.

Define the replacement you want

Say whether you want the existing function restored or an upgrade such as soft closing or fuller access. List what you normally store, especially heavy cookware or tools.
