Adding a counter above the washer and dryer? Plan support and service access
A folding counter above a front-load washer and dryer needs more than a board cut to the room's width. Plan what supports it, how the appliances will operate beneath it and how either machine can come out for service. Check those decisions before ordering the worktop or surrounding cabinets.

Choose the support system before the surface
Specify a counter supported independently of the appliance lids. IKEA's ENHET laundry arrangement uses supporting panels/legs with a worktop and requires wall securing. Bosch's WGA12400UC washer instructions describe installation beneath a continuous countertop secured to adjacent cabinets. These are particular arrangements, not a universal design for any span or material.
Ask the installer to confirm the chosen surface's support requirements, the available wall or cabinet structure, and the intended loads. Include heavy storage if planned. A counter above two machines is also different from stacking a dryer on a washer: that arrangement needs the applicable appliance compatibility and connection-kit review.
Measure the usable opening, not just the machines
Collect both complete model numbers and installation instructions. Include pedestals, drain pans and any planned appliance replacement. Bosch's WGA12400UC manual separates open-cabinet installation from enclosed arrangements with ventilation requirements; its dimensions should not be transferred to another washer or dryer.
Have the installer check the taller appliance, required gaps, counter thickness and support pieces together. Consider the finished folding height as well as whether the machines fit. Keep appliance lids and covers in place while planning; do not assume removing one is an acceptable way to gain clearance.
Show the proposed front edge on a photo. It must leave the controls readable, detergent drawer usable and doors able to open for loading. A deeper surface should not require pushing equipment back against its hoses, cord or exhaust connection.
Keep airflow and routine access in the design
Bosch's WQB245B0UC dryer manual requires its ventilation opening to remain clear and the surrounding area to be adequately ventilated. Its appliance diagram also identifies the lint screen and condensation container. Check the equivalent access points for your model before adding a front rail, side panel or decorative door.
Tell the installer whether the dryer uses an exhaust duct and identify any accessible connections without moving the appliance. A countertop proposal should preserve the existing required routes and access; a cabinet-like enclosure needs its own manufacturer-guided review. Do not assume a ventless dryer can be enclosed without airflow considerations.
Ask how either machine will come out
Agree on a service-removal plan before making the counter permanent. Ask whether each appliance can slide out independently, what trim or support would need removal, and whether valves and connections remain accessible. Record who handles any necessary appliance movement and gas, electrical or plumbing work.
Report an existing leak, damaged surface or unresolved machine movement before the area is enclosed. Ask which worktop material and edge treatment suit the expected moisture exposure. IKEA's care guidance for the cited ENHET support calls for prompt drying of wet marks; it does not make the entire proposed counter assembly waterproof.
Send one complete project request
Send Coast & Craft your city, both appliance models, a wide laundry-area photo, accessible measurements and the proposed worktop link. Include desired storage, rental approvals if applicable, and whether specialist connections must change. Ask for the accepted scope and responsible trades to be confirmed before arranging the work.
