Leftover house paint in Orange County: what to keep and where to take the rest
The labeled can of living-room wall paint might be worth saving for the next scuff. The half-full can from a color you painted over probably isn't. And the spray paint from a cabinet project goes on a different list. In Orange County, the right destination depends on the product, its container and whether it came from a household or a business.

Save the paint you could actually use
At the end of the project, ask the painter to point out the can for each surface you may need to touch up. Two whites called the same color can be different products or sheens. Photograph the product and tint labels, and note the room, wall or trim in a separate record.
Keep useful paint in its original labeled container with the lid secure, and follow its storage directions. Put your room note beside the manufacturer's label rather than over it. If you're booking another painting project with Coast & Craft, say which finish you still have and agree beforehand who will handle surplus materials.
Use PaintCare for eligible house paint
PaintCare California has a ZIP-code locator for participating sites, and there is no charge to drop off accepted paint. Eligible products include interior latex wall paint, oil-based house paint, primers and architectural wood stains. Spray paint, paint thinner and two-part coatings are outside the program. Check the actual product label; a can left on the painter's bench is not necessarily house paint.
PaintCare requires the original can with its manufacturer's printed label, a secure lid and no leak. Containers must be five gallons or smaller. That is the maximum size of one container, not permission to bring any number of cans. Call the site with your product names and quantities to confirm capacity, hours and acceptance that day.
Check the county route for other household materials
OC Waste & Recycling offers household hazardous waste collection to Orange County residents at no charge and may ask for proof of residence. The Irvine center is at 6411 Oak Canyon, Irvine, CA 92618. Anaheim, Huntington Beach and San Juan Capistrano also have county centers. Before leaving, check the county's location page or call 714-834-4000 for hours, closures and whether your specific materials are accepted. Rain and holidays can affect access.
The county lists a vehicle limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip and will not take containers larger than five gallons. Give staff the count and sizes if you're unsure how your load fits. Its centers do not take business waste. For a contractor's materials, ask the contractor to arrange an eligible business route. PaintCare has separate business criteria for oil-based products.
Missing label, unknown contents or a damaged can? Call first
An old jar marked only ‘white’ doesn't meet PaintCare's original-container and label requirements. Don't guess, combine leftovers or transfer liquid to another can. County centers also require sturdy, labeled, non-leaking containers with lids; they are not an automatic fallback for an unknown or leaking item.
Before transporting it, call OC Waste & Recycling. Describe what is legible on the outside, the container size, any damage and whether it came from your household. Ask what to do with that item in its present condition. Keep its contents undisturbed while you get instructions.
