Ordering motorized shades? Choose the power source and controls together

A wireless remote does not tell you how a shade's motor gets power. Before ordering motorized coverings, make two separate choices: what supplies each motor, and how you will control it. Otherwise, a shade can arrive with the right fabric and dimensions but without a practical power arrangement or the controls you expected.

Choose battery or wired power before buying

Lutron's Serena FAQ says its battery-powered and wired shades are different models, and a battery model cannot simply be switched to wired power later. That is a useful reason to decide early, rather than assuming any motor can accept a different supply.

The same FAQ describes two supported arrangements for its wired shades: a suitable Lutron plug-in adapter or a Lutron power panel installed by a licensed electrician. These are examples for that product family, not wiring options for every shade. Have the selected system's requirements checked and electrical work identified separately.

Put the power arrangement on a room photo

For a plug-in proposal, show the intended outlet, nearby furniture and where you would accept a visible cord. Ask the installer to confirm the route and the required accessories. A nearby receptacle does not settle how a cable reaches the shade neatly.

For batteries, specify the actual format. Hunter Douglas's charging guidance distinguishes an external rechargeable wand from an internal battery and requires its own charging accessories. Ask which arrangement applies and where routine access will happen once the shade and any decorative cover are fitted.

Flag high windows or furniture that makes access awkward. Have the installer demonstrate the maintenance arrangement; avoid a plan that depends on standing on furniture or removing the shade for ordinary charging.

Write down what each control should do

Lutron's Serena accessory list separates shade remotes from its smart hub and app controls. A handheld control and phone access are therefore separate items to check, not interchangeable descriptions of a complete package. Confirm compatibility with the exact shade and any existing home system.

  • Which windows must operate individually, and which should move together?
  • Where should the everyday control live so everyone using the room can reach it?
  • Is a handheld control sufficient, or is app control part of the requested setup?
  • Which hub, control accessories and power supplies are included rather than assumed?

Separate mounting from setup in the proposal

Ask whether the accepted work includes mounting only, supported power connections, control pairing or all three. Any electrical installation needs its own appropriate assessment. Agree which functions will be demonstrated at handover, including the individual and grouped movements you requested.

Send Coast & Craft the complete product list, room photos and your control preferences for review. Keep app accounts under your control and enter passwords yourself. Scope and visit details need confirmation before installation is arranged.
