Outdoor motion light staying on? Check its mode and detection area first
A motion light that stays on does not automatically need a new sensor. The timer may be restarting, a manual setting may be active, or the sensor may be watching the wrong area. Describe the pattern before buying a replacement or changing several settings at once.

Write down what the light actually does
Use observations from normal use over an evening. A light that never goes dark is a different complaint from one that switches on repeatedly or misses someone approaching the door. Include when the problem started and any recent bulb, switch or landscaping change.
- Does it stay at full brightness, dim between activations, or repeatedly turn off and on?
- Does it behave differently in daylight and after dark?
- Does it respond to someone crossing the path but miss the usual approach?
- Which wall switch or app controls it, and were any settings recently changed?
Distinguish the timer from repeated detection
HeathZenith explains that its motion-light timer restarts each time motion is detected. Activity before the timer expires can keep the light on longer than the selected interval. Its support guidance also identifies heat sources such as heating equipment and dryer vents as possible triggers.
From ground level, photograph the light and the area it faces. Include paths, nearby vents and other lights in the view. This gives an assessor something to compare with the model's coverage instructions; it does not prove that any particular object is causing the problem.
Check the model before interpreting a setting
Test, automatic and manual modes do different jobs. In the HeathZenith 5869 manual, manual mode overrides motion sensing and holds the light fully on at night until its specified limit. That behavior is intentional for that model. Do not use a switch-flipping reset sequence found for a different light.
The same manual says its sensor detects movement across the coverage area more readily than movement directly toward it. A missed approach can therefore warrant a coverage review, rather than simply increasing brightness. Ask for settings and aiming to be checked against the actual installation instructions.
Describe the light around the sensor, too
HeathZenith's support page notes that light reaching a photocell can interfere with night operation. It also explains that its optional DualBrite feature provides low-level lighting between motion activations. Dim light remaining on is not automatically the same symptom as a lamp stuck at full brightness.
Supply the model from a receipt, manual or safely visible label. Have the person assessing the fixture confirm which features it actually has. Leave high-mounted controls and anything requiring a ladder or fixture removal for the visit.
Separate a settings visit from electrical work
Tell the assessor if a dimmer or timer controls the circuit. The 5869 manual specifically excludes those controls; other products need their own compatibility check. If wiring, a wall control or the fixture must change, have a qualified electrical professional assess that work.
Send Coast & Craft the model, wide photo and short behavior notes for scope review. Ask whether the proposed visit covers settings and aiming, compatible component replacement or an electrician referral. Confirm the scope before purchasing another fixture; a replacement should address the cause as well as the desired lighting coverage.
