Adding pull-out cabinet storage? Check the opening and the travel

A pull-out basket can bring the back of a kitchen cabinet within reach, but the cabinet's outside width does not establish a fit. The organizer must pass through the opening, clear the door hardware and attach to suitable material. Check those conditions before ordering a set for every cupboard.

Measure the usable opening, not the door

Record the clear opening width, available interior depth and usable height. Keep the cabinet's outside dimensions separate. Rev-A-Shelf's 5WB selector asks for opening measurements and cabinet construction, and specifically calls out hinges and plumbing as possible obstructions.

Photograph the cabinet with its door open normally. Show the face frame, any center divider, hinge arms and existing shelf supports. Note where an obstruction narrows the route the basket would take. Under a sink, include pipes, valves and the disposal in the view without moving them. Have the selected model's drawing checked against those details.

Decide how much access you need

Rev-A-Shelf distinguishes partial extension, full extension and over-travel: these describe how far the unit moves, while soft closing describes its closing action. A soft-close label alone does not tell you whether the rear of the basket will be accessible.

Check the planned travel outside the cabinet too. An island, appliance handle or nearby door may occupy that space. Show the adjacent cabinet run in a wide photo. Ask for clearance to be assessed with the cabinet door open and the organizer fully extended, including room to lift out the largest item.

Match the mounting method to the cabinet

Pull-outs do not all fasten to the same surfaces. Knape & Vogt's RS-MUB basket instructions attach front and rear straps to the cabinet floor. Rev-A-Shelf's waste-container guide separately describes floor-mounted and side-mounted systems. Its 5CW2 cookware organizer uses bottom, side and rear mounting.

Have the installer inspect the surfaces required by your exact model, including panel thickness and visible swelling or damage. State whether an existing shelf must stay. Removing a fixed shelf, repairing a damaged base or changing hinges should be identified separately from fitting the organizer.

Check the contents before approving the product

List what will live in the pull-out and measure bulky pieces with their handles and lids. Record their combined weight. Rev-A-Shelf describes the 5CW2 with 100-pound-rated slides; that specification is not a universal allowance for every basket or an assessment of your cabinet. Ask how the selected product's load limit applies to the complete installed arrangement.

Send Coast & Craft a single request containing these details so fit, storage needs and any cabinet repairs can be reviewed together.

  • Cabinet photos, opening measurements and known obstructions.
  • The exact product link, size and installation instructions.
  • Contents, approximate weight and the largest item's dimensions.
  • Whether the door remains hinged or a confirmed compatible door-mount arrangement is wanted.
