Can existing cabinet doors be converted to soft-close?
Existing cabinet doors may be convertible to soft-close without replacing the doors. The useful first question is whether their hinges accept a matching damper or need replacement. A soft-close label alone does not establish compatibility with the hardware already installed.

Two routes, with different work involved
An add-on damper keeps a compatible existing hinge and slows the closing movement. Blum's BLUMOTION 973A range is an example: its catalog assigns different units to specific CLIP and CLIP top hinges and arm shapes. The brand name on the hinge is only the start of that match.
An integrated system puts the damping mechanism inside the hinge. Blum's CLIP top BLUMOTION, for example, contains it in the hinge cup. Choosing this route means replacing the relevant hinges; it does not mean that every existing plate or door recess can automatically be reused. Have that reuse confirmed for the proposed parts.
Cabinet construction and door position are separate
Face-frame cabinets have a frame around the front opening; frameless cabinets do not. Overlay describes a door overlapping that opening, while an inset door sits within it. Both distinctions matter when selecting replacement hardware.
Blum's 110-degree hinge planning tables link overlay or inset positioning with mounting-plate spacing and door drilling. A replacement must preserve the door's position and required opening clearance. Ask whether the conversion uses the existing holes or requires new machining. If you want to keep the doors untouched, make that a condition of the proposal.
Replacing just one hinge is not a universal shortcut
Hinges on the same door must work through compatible movement. Hettich specifically says its Sensys 8645i and Intermat 9943 cannot share one door because their movement differs. A matching opening-angle description is not enough to make that combination suitable.
Do not assume one new soft-close hinge can be paired with any old hinge. Ask the supplier to confirm the complete combination and the required number of damping elements for that door. Treat corner doors and doors concealing pull-out drawers as separate cases.
Make the proposal clear before buying a kitchen's worth
Ask Coast & Craft to separate these decisions in the project scope. A trial on a representative door can make the intended result easier to judge before committing to the full quantity.
- Which doors receive matched dampers, and which require replacement hinges?
- Are mounting plates, drilling or finish repairs included?
- Will the converted door close fully and retain the opening clearance needed for adjacent doors and internal drawers?
