Adding bathroom grab bars? Plan the position and wall support together

Choose a bathroom grab bar around the person using it and a verified mounting plan. An empty stretch of tile is not enough to establish a suitable location, and a matching finish does not tell you whether the bar and its attachment will provide the intended support.

Describe the task before choosing a length

Explain where support is needed: entering the shower, moving beside the toilet or using another part of the bathroom. A photo can show the room arrangement, but it cannot determine the right reach or position for an individual. Do not demonstrate a difficult movement just to obtain a photo.

Moen's INS12302 instructions direct users to consult a healthcare professional for advice specific to their needs. If a clinician has recommended a layout, share the relevant dimensions with the installer without sending unrelated medical records. Have the proposed location and installation assessed together before settling on the product.

Match the mounting method to the exact bar and wall

Manufacturer instructions can impose requirements that a generic anchor package does not address. For example, Delta's 102831 Rev. D instructions require at least one end of the covered grab bars to attach to a wall stud. Their supplied wall anchor also has wall-thickness limits and must not be installed into water-damaged or decayed wallboard. This is a product-specific example, not a rule for every grab bar.

Have the installer establish the suitable support and attachment for your selected model. Show any renovation records or photos taken before the wall was closed, if available. Existing tile, grout lines or accessory holes do not establish where hidden support is located. Do not drill exploratory holes yourself.

Compare a complete installation scope

Before accepting a quote, identify which parts of the work are included. A straightforward attachment to suitable existing support and work that needs wall access are different proposals.

Delta's instructions also address concealed plumbing or wiring and sealing mounting penetrations against water damage. Ask the installer to account for those conditions rather than treating the job as simply attaching two ends to the visible surface.

  • Exact bar model, length, position and orientation agreed for the intended use.
  • Assessment of wall construction and the specified mounting hardware.
  • Any additional support work, wall access or specialist work identified before acceptance.
  • Sealing, tile or paint repairs, and treatment of any unused holes.
  • When the installation is ready for use and which care instructions to keep.

Keep the product details after the work

Save the model number and its instructions with the project record. Moen's identification guide links individual bar families to their dimensions and installation sheets; a general collection name alone may not identify the item you have. Retain the care and inspection guidance for that exact product.

If a grab bar becomes loose, stop using it for support and arrange an assessment; Delta specifically warns against use when looseness is present. Do not test it by hanging your weight from it.

Send Coast & Craft the room photos, proposed product and any agreed layout. Ask the team to confirm whether it can accept the required installation and finishing scope before purchasing.
