Replacing a kitchen sink? Check the opening and the space below
A replacement sink can match the old sink's advertised size and still need a different countertop opening. Before buying, have the proposed sink checked against the existing cutout, its mounting arrangement and the plumbing space underneath. A deeper bowl adds another fit question even when the top looks unchanged.

Compare the cutout, not just the outside dimensions
Kohler's self-rimming sink instructions list K-5805 and K-5809 with the same overall dimensions but different cutout dimensions and corner radii. That is a useful example of why a matching width on a sales page is insufficient; those cutouts apply to the named models.
Find the existing sink model, countertop records or original template if available. Have the installer compare the actual opening with the proposed model's template, including the corners and rim coverage. A visible bowl measurement is not necessarily the full countertop cutout. Leave the sink installed while gathering information; concealed edges need professional assessment.
Confirm what supports the replacement
Kohler distinguishes a top-mount sink, whose rim sits above the countertop, from an undermount sink mounted beneath it. Its guide also treats apron-front sinks as a separate configuration. Changing styles calls for a countertop and cabinet review rather than assuming the existing support arrangement can stay.
Send the countertop material and photos of the sink edge and cabinet interior. Ask the installer to check the candidate's minimum cabinet requirement, mounting access, support needs and clearance to the backsplash and faucet. Identify any countertop or cabinet alteration separately, including who would perform it, before ordering.
Check where a deeper bowl puts the disposal
InSinkErator's EZ Connect manual measures the disposal outlet position from the bottom of the sink. It also requires the drain connection to be lower than the disposal discharge for the models covered. A deeper bowl can therefore change the available drainage layout, not just the storage space beneath it.
Have a plumbing professional compare the proposed bowl depth and drain position with the disposal model and existing drain connection. Ask whether the disposal can remain, whether a different sink would avoid changes, and what plumbing work is included. Do not assume a sink with an offset drain or a different bowl count reconnects in the same place.
Include any under-sink filter, pull-out bin and faucet hose in the space review. Photograph them in place without disconnecting pipes, moving electrical equipment or removing the disposal.
Make the purchase decision with one complete request
Send Coast & Craft your city and the following details for scope review before agreeing to a visit:
- Existing and proposed sink model numbers, plus the new template and specification sheet.
- Top-view and open-cabinet photos, countertop material and any measurements still uncertain.
- Whether the faucet, disposal, filters and cabinet storage are staying.
- Any known leak or damaged cabinet material, and whether removal, disposal and finish repairs should be included.
