Replacing an over-the-range microwave: check the mounting and cabinet fit

An over-the-range microwave replacement needs more than an appliance that fits between the cabinets. Keep the new mounting hardware and templates, and have the installer compare them with the existing upper cabinet and wall. The old microwave's position is useful information, but it does not establish that the replacement can use the same attachments or openings.

Plan around the new mounting system

GE's replacement guidance says to use the bracket supplied with the new microwave because it is model-specific, along with the new screws, bolts and exhaust adapter. Choosing the same brand or a similar-looking appliance does not establish that the old bracket should stay.

Ask whether the proposed work includes the wall mounting plate, upper-cabinet attachment and any repair to existing holes or damaged material. Tell the installer about loose cabinets, previous alterations or a backsplash added around the old appliance. Leave removal and inspection behind the microwave to the installation team.

Keep the correct templates with the appliance

GE explains that its top and rear templates identify mounting and cutout positions; its rear template is used for rear outdoor exhaust. The mounting bracket serves as its own template. These distinctions matter when comparing the new appliance with existing cabinet openings.

Obtain the documents for the exact new model before the visit. GE notes that a replacement letter-size template supplied by support is not to scale, although dimensions are shown. Have the installer verify the template and measurements rather than treating a downloaded or resized printout as ready for marking. Keep the original templates and hardware together.

Check height, depth and door movement as well as width

Provide accessible opening measurements and a photo showing the upper cabinet, adjacent walls and cooking surface. Include the existing microwave's height and projection. A taller replacement can change the space beneath it; a different door or handle can change clearance beside it.

Whirlpool's W11199607B instructions require door clearance beside a sidewall and note that installation dimensions depend on the cooking appliance below. Have the installer check both appliances' requirements instead of copying the old position.

Agree on the exhaust configuration and power access

Whirlpool W11199607B covers models shipped for recirculation, with changes required for outdoor exhaust. Specify the intended mode and ask for configuration and filters to be included. Mark an unknown existing route as unknown; leave inspection to the installer.

Those Whirlpool instructions require a grounded outlet inside the upper cabinet and prohibit extension cords. Show an accessible outlet without opening electrical fittings. Any outlet, circuit or duct alteration needs its own scope and appropriately qualified installer.

Define removal, installation and finishing together

Whirlpool requires two or more people to move and install the covered models. Arrange an installation team rather than a trial removal. Confirm protection of the cooking surface, any necessary range movement and old-appliance disposal.

Send Coast & Craft the model details, photos and proposed product link for review. Include cabinet or backsplash finishing and operating checks in the requested scope. The team must confirm the accepted work and any appliance, electrical or ventilation specialist needed before a visit is agreed.
