Planning a reach-in closet organizer? Start with the clothes and door opening

A closet organizer can fit the back wall and still leave a drawer trapped behind a door. Before choosing a kit, decide what needs hanging space, what belongs on shelves and which parts of the closet you can actually reach. Storage capacity on a product page is only useful if the arrangement works in your opening.

Give long clothes their own space

ClosetMaid recommends taking an inventory and measuring the space used by long and short garments. Separate dresses and coats from shirts or folded trousers before choosing between a full-height hanging area and stacked hanging sections. A second rod is not useful where your longest clothes need to hang.

Make a short list of the things your current closet handles poorly: shoes on the floor, folded stacks that fall over, or accessories without a home. Assign each a proposed location in the drawing. Keep frequently used items within your own comfortable reach rather than copying a display layout.

Measure the opening as well as the interior

ClosetMaid's design preparation asks for wall dimensions, closet height and door width. Its planning guide also points out drawer clearance, particularly with sliding doors. Show the proposed drawer positions with the doors in their normal open positions; interior width alone does not prove a pullout will clear them.

Ask the installer to check any awkward side pockets or low overhead areas before you buy. A photo looking straight into the closet can miss these restrictions.

  • Send one photo with the doors closed and another with them fully open.
  • Include accessible measurements and identify anything you could not measure reliably.
  • Mark baseboards, existing rods and shelves on the sketch.
  • Show which shelves and drawers you expect to use every day.

Order from one checked design

Elfa's planner lets a homeowner enter room measurements, adjust components and save a design with a picking list. Whether you use that system or another, send the final drawing and parts list together. A saved inspiration image is not a complete order.

Have the exact organizer's support requirements checked against the closet walls. ClosetMaid distinguishes mounting hardware for different wall materials; do not assume the existing shelf's fixings suit the replacement. Ask for the selected system's load and support instructions to govern the installation.

Include the empty-closet work

Confirm who removes the old shelving, disposes of it, patches exposed holes and handles any painting. Agree on the sequence before scheduling assembly, including when finishes will be ready for installation. Make room elsewhere for the clothes while that work happens.

Send Coast & Craft the layout, product links and closet photos for scope review. Describe door repairs or wall finishing as separate requested work so they can be considered before visit details are confirmed.
