Updating recessed can lights? Match the LED trim to the housing first
An LED retrofit trim can update a recessed light while keeping a compatible housing in the ceiling. The purchase is different from replacing a bulb: the module may combine its light source, driver, lens and visible trim. Before ordering a multipack, establish which housings you have and whether the proposed modules are suitable for them.

Say which parts you intend to keep
Ask whether the proposal retains the existing recessed housings or replaces them. Those are different scopes, especially when ceiling repairs or new wiring are involved. Do not order a product merely because its photo resembles the finished circle you want.
Cooper's LT56 smooth-splay specification describes an integrated module containing the LED array, optical assembly, driver and trim. Its complete light also requires a suitable housing. Keep the exact module number with the project request so the provider can establish what stays and what changes.
Have the housing and connection identified
Look for the existing housing model in installation records or receipts. If it is unknown, send floor-level photos of each different light style and leave concealed-label checks to the qualified electrician. Similar visible trims do not establish that every housing in the room is identical.
HALO's LT56 five-color-temperature instructions illustrate the checks involved: they name compatible housings and give construction, internal-volume and input-rating conditions. They also distinguish an E26 screw-base adapter from an LED connection for specified HALO housing series. These conditions belong to that product; they do not make every recessed can or matching-looking connector acceptable.
Ask the electrician to confirm both the approved electrical connection and the module's mounting arrangement. Unidentified parts or damaged retained components need assessment before the order is finalized.
Check the visible finish as well as the hidden fit
Compare the selected module's outer trim dimensions with the existing ceiling footprint. Include a close photo taken safely from below if an old paint outline or damaged edge is visible. Ask whether the new trim will cover it and whether patching or painting is a separate item.
Mention sloped ceilings, tall stairwells and furniture that limits access. The installer should confirm the product's suitability and how it will sit against the actual ceiling before promising a flush result.
Match the location rating to the actual spot
Mark shower locations and protected outdoor ceilings separately from ordinary room lights. HALO lists the LT56 baffle-trim family for damp and wet locations, including showers and protected ceilings. That statement is specific to the listed product and its installation conditions; a different LED module may have different limits.
Have the proposed combination checked for the particular location. A wet-location claim does not settle housing compatibility or every exposure condition.
Approve one clear schedule of lights
Send Coast & Craft the room photos, proposed model and housing information available. The team can confirm the accepted scope and any electrical assessment needed before a visit is agreed. Keep a short purchasing schedule:
- Each location, housing type and approved retrofit module.
- Quantity, trim finish and selected light appearance.
- Existing switch or dimmer, with compatibility still to be confirmed where needed.
- Any separate ceiling repair, access work or housing replacement.
