Wallpaper lifting at the seams: repair one edge or assess the wall?

A single lifted wallpaper edge may be repairable without replacing a whole strip. Several loose seams, damp areas or paint coming away call for a broader assessment. Start by identifying the covering and recording what you can see; the curled edge alone does not establish the cause.

Record the edge without enlarging the damage

Take a full-wall photo and a close-up of each affected area. Note whether an edge curls away, a gap appears between flat strips, or a larger section has released. Record when you first noticed it and any previous repair.

Leave attached paper in place. Avoid pulling the edge farther open, cutting it off or covering it with tape. Keep spare paper and its roll label for a possible replacement.

Find out which adhesive system you have

Use the label, receipt or installer’s records to identify pasted, prepasted or peel-and-stick wallpaper. Include the exact product and any original paste information; appearance alone may not identify the backing.

For pasted papers, ask the wallpaper supplier which repair adhesive and handling method suit that material. Peel-and-stick needs its own answer: Tempaper says its self-adhesive products require no additional adhesive for installation. Ask your manufacturer whether re-smoothing, replacement or a specific repair product is appropriate before adding glue.

What makes a local repair worth assessing?

A limited loose edge with intact paper and a sound, dry surface is a candidate for inspection. ROMAN’s seam-repair guidance calls for checking damage beneath the repair area before proceeding. Have the repairer establish whether the edge can be reattached without an unacceptable crease or damaged face.

ROMAN sells an adhesive for loose seams and curling corners, but lists it as non-strippable. Ask how an approved repair would affect later removal and what visible result is realistic. A repair product’s name does not establish compatibility with your paper.

When the scope should widen

Report repeated lifting after a repair, several releasing strips, visible paint flakes on an already-exposed backing, stains or dampness. Do not peel more paper away to investigate. These observations call for checking the wall and installation conditions; they do not prove poor workmanship.

ROMAN identifies humidity, substrate condition and adhesive compatibility among possible contributors. If moisture is suspected, have its source assessed by the appropriate professional before a cosmetic repair. Ask whether the scope needs wall preparation or removal and replacement, with findings reviewed before expanding the work.

Send one repair request

Send Coast & Craft the photos, product details, affected locations and repair history. Say whether matching spare paper is available. Request a review of local repair first, with any wall investigation, preparation or replacement identified separately.
