Wallpaper removal: information that changes the scope
A wallpaper-removal estimate needs more than wall dimensions. The covering, what is underneath it, and the finish you want afterward determine the work to include. Before agreeing on a price or completion date, establish what is known and what needs a small, agreed assessment area.
Identify the covering if you can
Save any leftover roll label, receipt or product link. York distinguishes peel-and-stick, strippable, traditional wallpaper and coverings with a removable face layer. With that last type, the visible surface can come away while paper backing remains. A loose edge alone does not establish how much work the whole wall needs.
Tell the estimator whether there are borders, paint over the wallpaper or known earlier layers. Describe the wall beneath it as drywall, plaster or unknown. An honest unknown is more useful than guessing from the home's age.
Agree on an assessment area
ROMAN recommends a small test area to check attachment, layers and the underlying wall. Arrange for the person assessing the job to choose a suitable location and method, with your permission before disturbing the finish. Ask what the test will leave exposed and whether making it presentable again is included.
Have the findings recorded: what released, what stayed behind and whether the wall surface was damaged. Treat that result as evidence for the estimate. Ask how additional layers or different conditions elsewhere would change the scope and require your agreement.
Separate removal from wall preparation
Paper coming down does not necessarily leave a finished wall. ROMAN's adhesive-removal guidance identifies residual paste as a separate cleanup concern before painting or repapering. Its removal guide also includes repairing damage before the next finish.
Request clear descriptions of backing and adhesive removal, repairs, any broader smoothing, and the proposed primer or sealer. Ask which work is included and which depends on inspection after removal. Photos can show existing tears and loose seams, but they cannot confirm the condition of every covered area.
Name the result you want afterward
Say whether the plan is paint or new wallpaper, and provide the selected product if available. Ask the estimator to explain the preparation needed for that finish and the time allowed between stages. Keep removal-only and removal-plus-finishing proposals distinct so their totals can be compared meaningfully.
